White Wine Storing Tips

14 Jul White Wine Storing Tips

There are a number of specific principles to keep in view when learning how to store any wine in general; and keeping them in dark, cool spaces where they are will remain undisturbed and still are common aspects of wine storage. However, when you begin breaking out the storing requirements for reds, whites, fortified and sparkling wines, you’ll notice that minor temperature level and duration specification changes can add up to a considerable difference in their performance post-storage.

Storing White Wines – What Temperature is Right?

The ideal storage temperatures for white wines lie in the range of 5-10°C, which comfortably keeps them within the parameters of the suggested ideal serving temperature of 9°C for white wines. However, if you’re storing your whites and reds in the same wine fridge or cellar, the happy median temperature to maintain would be around 13°C. This will sufficiently accommodate both the reds and whites for long term storage.

Can white wines be stored in the refrigerator?

Many people want to know whether it’s alright to store white wines in a standard kitchen refrigerator. The aspect to keep in mind here is that your kitchen refrigerator generally operates at 1 °C- 4 °C which is significantly colder than a basic wine refrigerator. These low temps put your whites at risk for losing their vibrant flavours, leaving behind a wine that is flavourless on the palate & flat on the nose. The standard kitchen refrigerator also operates on a heavy-duty motor that causes constant vibrations throughout the fridge and extended vibration will only end up ruining your wine.

How long can my whites be stored?

The vast majority of white wines (as well as red wines) are meant to be consumed within 2-3 years. As a thumb rule, most mass-market whites are the freshest upon release and its best to open them as close to the vintage year as possible.

Where should I store my whites?

Most people that have stored white wines will know that they have gotten it wrong at one point or the other. There are a number of ways in which you can store your white wines; ranging from commercially available wine refrigerator units, to cool basements, or even climate controlled wine cabinets or wine cellars. The option you choose will be dependent on how much wine you want to store, the amount of available space in your home and your budget.

Get a custom designed wine cellar installed

While wine refrigerators and wine coolers are compact and more budget-friendly, they aren’t always the best option for storing white wine. If the available space and your budget permit it, you should consider getting a temperature-controlled underground wine cellar installed. This feature can be customised for your home; you can decide what its dimensions will be the materials to be used and the type of racking system it will have etc.

You can hire expert custom design wine cellar experts like the ones at Signature Cellars to provide solutions that fit into your budget and preferences.
