While most wine isn’t intended for long-term storage, serving it at the ideal temperature is essential for maximizing its taste. In Australia, questions about serving temperature are common, particularly regarding red wine and rosé.

While red wine should generally be served at room temperature, it can benefit from slight chilling during hotter months. Rosé should be chilled, but not too much, as overly cold temperatures can mute its delicate flavours.

The Optimal Wine Serving Temperature

Serving wine at
the optimal temperature can be a matter of personal preference, so try a range
of temperatures to see what works best for your favourite bottles. A wine
fridge or thermometer can help keep your wine at just the right temperature.

Don’t be hesitant
to experiment with different serving temps until you discover the one that best
complements your tastes and the wine you’re serving. Wine thermometers and wine
refrigerators can help you get the temperature right, but only you can
determine the best temperature for your favourite bottle of vino.

Ideal Wine Serving Temperatures

The outmoded and
nebulous phrase “room temperature” that underpins the prevalent habit
of serving red wines at that temperature has its roots in the colder ancient
English castles. Serving wines at the correct temperature is, thus, essential.
The following information can be used as a guide for determining the best
serving temperature for wine.

Light & Sweet White Wines: 7-13°C

Full-bodied, Sweet White Wines: 10-13°C

Sparkling Wines: 4-10°C

Light-to-Medium-bodied Rosé and White Wines:
7-13°C

Full-bodied White Wines: 13-15°C

Light-bodied Red Wines: 13-15°C

Full-bodied Red Wines: 15-18°C

Fortified Wines: 13-18°C

In some cases,
winemakers include suggested serving temperatures on the label or in the
accompanying notes, particularly for wines produced in unique styles.

Different Ways To Chill Wine To The Right Temperature

It’s crucial to
serve wine at the ideal temperature, but it might be difficult to do if you
don’t have a multi-zone wine fridge. Follow these pointers:

Use the cold storage space effectively. Due to
the thick and high-insulating properties of traditional glass wine bottles,
chilling a bottle can take quite some time. Expect one hour for every 5.5
degrees Celsius. You must chill a standard-sized bottle of wine in a
refrigerator set at 4 degrees Celsius. Wine served at room temperature (24°C)
should be chilled in the refrigerator for about two hours to reach the ideal
serving temperature of 13°C.

Utilize the refrigerator or freezer if you
need something done quickly. Wine may be chilled by 5.5 degrees Celsius in a
freezer at -18 degrees Celsius for around 20 minutes. What would take two hours
in the refrigerator takes only forty minutes in the freezer. Don’t risk having
your wine freeze by forgetting about it.

The quickest solution is to use an ice bucket.
Two-thirds fill the ice bucket with ice, and the third with water. Because
water is a greater conductor than air, this technique may quickly cool a bottle
to the perfect temperature in about 15 minutes. Furthermore, ice buckets have a
refined aesthetic. Remember to completely immerse the bottle to ensure the wine
in the neck also chills.

Please don’t put ice cubes in the wine. They
won’t melt. Don’t cool your vintage with ice cubes to prevent watering down
your vintage. Glasses and teeth can be broken or chipped by metal ice cubes. To
fast cool your wine, consider using frozen grapes. This ingenious technique
raises the bar for presentation and snackability, especially when red grapes
are used with red wine and green grapes are used with white wine. Choose
organic grapes and give them a good washing before freezing.

Store Your Wines At The Right Temperature

Maintaining the proper storage temperature is as crucial as the serving temperature, and that’s where we come in.
