When it comes to wine production, New South Wales doesn’t stand out as a major contributor when compared to large wine producing states such as Northern Territory or South Australia. NSW doesn’t have a very notable wine producing region, and Canberra District is the only exception.

However, there are some regions in New South Wales where some top wines are produced and Southern Highlands, Tumbarumba and Orange are some of the better known wine producing areas in the state.

If you look closely, you will find that there are many interesting things happening in the New South Wales’ wine industry. However, every region is known for different wine styles and you need to know what to look for; this is a brief guide of the wine regions of New South Wales:

Canberra District

This region has quite a modern, exciting and high-profile image that has moved beyond the borders of the state. Clonakilla has some innovative Shiraz bottlings like the Shiraz viognier blend, Riesling dry whites and Viognier and Tim Kirk promotes these wines relentlessly, to great success.

Under his Helm label, Ken Helm has done the same with the Rieslings his winery produces. The Carpenter family makes some notable wines and there are some more winemakers like Andrew McEwin, of Kyeema and Alex McKay, Nick O’Leary, of Collector Wines who make some premium Shiraz’. The Grainery is another notable white blended wine that’s made from chardonnay, viognier, marsanne, and roussanne.

Hunter Valley

Some great wines are produced in this region and it is home to a number of brands and wineries. Hunter Valley Shiraz & Semillon are 2 of the greatest wine styles in Australia. Lakes Folly, Tyrrell’s, Audrey Wilkinson, Hungerford Hill, Peppertree and Brokenwood are just some of the excellent names in this region. Meerea Park, De Iuliis, First Creek and Thomas Wines are the newer entrants, while Semillon and Shiraz are the specialties of the region.

The Orange region is packed with promise, and Ross Hill, Printhie and Angullong are some of the best known vineries here. They offer some smart alternative varieties such as Savagni, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Barbera; most of the Bloodwood wines are fairly-priced and full of character.

Chardonnay is undoubtedly the most successful variety in the region that Bloodwood, Canobolas-Smith, Printhie and Ross Hill excel at. The Sauvignon Blanc produced in Orange is far better than that in most parts of the country. The region produces some good Rieslings, Shiraz’ and Cabernets.

The Hilltops vineyard Moppity has an exciting range of wines under the Coppabella label. The region produces some impressive table wines like Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as some outstanding sparkling wines. Aside from these, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc are some of the leading varieties.

Some more regions

Riverina and Murray Darling are the other wine-producing regions that are known for their sweet table wines such as McWilliams Morning Light, Westend 3 Bridges Golden Mist, Lillypilly Estate and De Bortoli Noble One.

Southern Highlands produces some stunning sparkling and white wines and Centennial Vineyards, Artemis, Cherry Tree Hill and Tertini, are some of the names to look out for here. Hilltops, Mudgee are the other NSW areas that wines are produced in. As you can see, there are a number of regions in NSW that have some famous vineries and vintners.
